Christmas Tapestry – Christmas Book and Activities Unit

I first heard of Patricia Polacco when I came across Pink and Say at the library. I have no idea where her books had been hiding before that, because I can’t believe I hadn’t read these amazing books. So when it came time to choose some Christmas books, I had to see what she had written. She has a couple of other Christmas books, but I couldn’t get my hands on them in time to do this unit. But I would have chosen this one anyway, because it is just rich in awesomeness!

In the Christmas Tapestry, a pastor and his family moves to take over a run-down inner city church, and Jonathan Jefferson Weeks is not sure that was the best thing to do. When a leak causes major damage in the church and threatens the Christmas Eve service, they find a large tapestry to cover the wall. While it seems to be a worthless piece of fabric, the tapestry holds a secret that may reunite a family.

I highly recommend this book! I had tears in my eyes by the time we got to the end, and it is a perfect story that illustrates God’s provision in the lives of His people.

Christmas Unit Study Activities

Character / Biblical Studies

Perseverance – Jonathan Jefferson Weeks thinks the Christmas Eve service will be ruined by the catastrophe of the roof leak, but it turns out to be for the best. Even when the pastor and his family faced hardship, they figured out a way to go ahead with the plans. What do you think would have happened if they hadn’t tried to find a solution to the wall damage?

Faithfulness – The elderly lady tells the story of her life and it illustrates a life of faithfulness. Faithfulness to her God, her family, and her country. How can we show faithfulness in our lives?

World War II – The old Jewish woman tells the story of her life in Germany and time in the concentration camp. This might be a good time to find out a little bit more about what happened in Nazi Germany. Here’s a great WWII Christmas Unit Study. Our favorite book about this time is The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom.

Germany – This book would be a wonderful starting point for a geography study of Europe and Germany.

Tapestry – Find out the history of the Bayeux tapestry and make one yourself!

Holiday Activities

Hanukkah – I am not very familiar with the holiday traditions surrounding Hanukkah, so I think we may do a short study on this Jewish tradition. Homeschool Share has a really nice lapbook on Hanukkah.

Christmas is my favorite time of the year, a season of giving! These Christmas Book Unit Studies will help your kids to focus on the reason for the season!
