Tools for Teaching Middle School Math when you are a work-at-home Mom

It can be difficult for me to take time from my work during the day to sit down and explain each math lesson to my middle-schooler. And as the problems get harder, it gets harder for me to remember how to do them! As my girls get closer to Algebra, I have been looking for something to help if they hit a concept they don’t understand. So I was excited to find Nicole the Math Lady Math videos!

 Why I LOVE Saxon Math

A few years ago, I ripped open the test scores from our yearly required achievement tests, and my heart sank when I saw my daughter’s math score. She had scored in the 20th percentile of children her age, and she didn’t have mastery of any of the concepts tested. Whatever we were using wasn’t getting through to her brain. It was time for something better.

So, I started searching for something… anything that would make math click for my talented, smart girl. I remembered that we had used Saxon Math when I was homeschooled and that my brothers and I always did really well in math. (My younger brother is now a public school math teacher!)

Because I knew that she had some major gaps in her understanding, I took her all the way back to third grade math. I bought a used copy of Saxon Intermediate 3, and we moved very quickly through it to make sure she got all of the basics down, before we moved on to the next book. It took about two years to get through Intermediate 3, Saxon 5/4, Saxon 6/5, and Saxon 7/6 and actually get her to her grade level again. This past year, when we received her 7th grade test scores, she was place in the 98th percentile for math! That is a HUGE improvement from the dismal score a few years before!

Algebra doesn’t have to be scary

So obviously, Saxon Math is the right fit for her. She is absolutely excelling in her math and doesn’t complain about math homework. But we are getting really close to high school and ALGEBRA. Which I loved when I was in school, but let’s face it… It’s been a long time since I was in high school. I’m not a spring chicken anymore! <sob> Not only that, but there are times when I just can’t drop everything I am working on to help my junior high student work her way through a math lesson. Nicole the Math Lady takes the increasingly complex math lessons of middle school, and makes them fun with her quirky, memorable teaching style!

Online Saxon Math Videos

And that’s just one of the reasons I absolutely adore Nicole the Math Lady math videos. Her fun teaching style and “Nicole-isms” make it more fun to sit down and do math every day, and it helps my middle-schoolers be just a little more independent. Just one less thing for me to worry about getting done today.

I love that it goes along with the math curriculum I already know and love (and own!), but you can use it with any math curriculum out there by using the topic list. So if your student is struggling with Pythagorean’s theorum, she can help them, no matter what math program you use. Seriously, I watched that video and learned more than I remember forgetting!

She has the odd-numbered lessons on her YouTube channel, but for the price of a couple of tutoring sessions, you can have video tutoring for every lesson in the Saxon Math book, plus lots of practice problems and even fun, corny brain break videos. And it can fit right it with what you are already using. You can either use it as the main instruction or to supplement and get in some extra practice.

My younger daughter isn’t quite ready for this level yet, but she loves watching the corny brain break videos!
